John Stephen Dwyer
Writer, photographer - Boston, Massachusetts, USA

I'm a Boston native who was born in Brighton, grew up in Jamaica Plain, and now lives in Kenmore Square with a window facing Fenway Park.  I've been writing and taking photos professionally since the 1990s.  Although it's Boston that I know best, I’ve also had the opportunity to write about and photograph happenings in other cities including Amsterdam, Dublin, London, New York and Paris.

My first "grown up job" was on Cape Cod as editor of The Source, a tabloid in Provincetown.  That was followed by several years as a staff writer and photographer for In Newsweekly.  Including my long-running weekly column on Boston and Providence nightlife, I've published over three hundred print articles and at least twice that many photos. I've written in various styles on a wide range of topics and have published features, reviews, interviews, history, humor, poetry, opinion, and so on.  I've met, interviewed, or photographed interesting people from Bono to Barack Obama.

In addition to experience writing for newspapers and magazines, I learned valuable skills as a researcher at New England Historical Genealogical Society, as a guide at Massachusetts Audubon Society, as an intern at Children's Museum, and as coordinator of the Clinical Research Graduate Program at Tufts University.  What I know is mostly self-taught, but I've also studied at U Mass Amherst, University College Cork (in Ireland), and Harvard.

I've gotten recent by lines from Encyclopædia Britannica, Popular Science, Washington Independent, Brandeis, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and others for use of my images.  I currently write for Blast Magazine and have recently interviewed the band Dark Dark Dark, Adam and Jamie from MythBusters, and FDR's grandson Curtis Roosevelt.

Please check out my photos and writing.  If you’re involved with online or print publication and want to get me on board for a specific project, please send me email.
